Everyone always tells you how different things are going to be once you have kids. It was hard for me to understand what that statement really meant until I become a parent.
This how I would best explain it… for me it was as if my heart no longer lived inside my body, it lived in hers.
I owe it to my daughter to give her everything I can to prepare her to create the life she desires. That is my responsibility as her mom.
The keyword here is CREATE.
So what does the word create really mean? Well, according to Merriam-Webster:
cre·ate
verb \krē-ˈāt, ˈkrē-ˌ\
: to make or produce (something) : to cause (something new) to exist
: to cause (a particular situation) to exist
: to produce (something new, such as a work of art) by using your talents and imagination
Creativity is not something we learn “how to do”. It’s there from day one in each one of us. We simply need to preserve it.
As a parent, it’s my obligation to nurture and support my creative child. Children are naturally creative and curious. Hand a toddler a crayon and a piece of paper. You won’t need to show them what to do – they’ll know what to do. If you’re a parent, you know what I mean. Our job is to teach our children to embrace their creativity and watch them shape and develop it as they grow.
How each of us expresses our creativity is what makes us unique. For some (like me) it’s drawing and painting. For others it’s music, writing, cooking, sewing, sculpture, building things, or fixing things. You name it – there is something we’re all drawn to.
We each have an art that is ours. What is that for you?
When I’m focused on creating art, it’s like nothing else exists. When you find that space in your mind and you are freely creating, it’s magical.
My mother has supported my creative life from as early as I can remember. It’s now my turn to spark and nurture that creative spirit in my daughter.
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. – Picasso
At 5 years old – I’d say we’re well on our way. The expression on her face in this picture says it all.
The potential lives in each one of us to create the path in life we choose. It all starts with our thoughts. We create within our minds then we create within our world.
Creative people make things happen.
This is beautiful and brilliant and so very true. There is nothing more magical than the spirit & imagination that lives inside children and nothing more special than to watch them let it out.
I couldn’t agree more! Thank you for the comment! Watching my daughter grow and seeing her creativity blossom is the magic I look forward to everyday.
I’d say you’re doing a great job of parenting for sure Crystal! The expression on her face is priceless. You can definitely tell she really enjoys all the different art projects that you guys do together.
Thanks for the compliment Chris! That photo of her is one of my absolute favorites! She was dancing outside of a restaurant while we waited in line. I love capturing her little spirit when she’s not looking! We have so much fun together being creative whenever we can.
Parenting has to be about the most rewarding and challenging thing I have ever done in my life.
I absolutely love this article about encouraging our children to create though… the biggest parenting skill of all is to help our children develop their gifts and talents…
It’s our differences that create our rewards in life, not our similarities.
Far too often today, kids and adults are just expected to conform to the way things are…
Creativity is the source of everything that makes each of wonderfully unique!
Great article on parenting Crystal
Thank you Mike! I couldn’t agree more. The mindset and values we instill in our kids is what prepares them to take on the world. Empowering our kids with their creative spirit and developing their interests and talents will set them up for nothing but success! As parents we want nothing more than to see our kids get exactly what they want in this life.
Awesome article and information! Although I do not have any children, I imagine I’d be a parent similar to you. Promote creativity and expressionism to be happy and healthy…. heck, even as adults we need to do that – do not conform!!!!!! 🙂
Hi Bill! You’re absolutely right! Kids aside – we all need to be ourselves and put our creativity to use at it’s fullest potential. Do not conform – carve a new path! Thanks for stopping by!
